A Few of My Favorite Things…

By Alison June 2, 2005 No Comments 3 Min Read

Today hasn’t been a good day. Finley has vomited in spectacular style, the house smells like nothing I can explain and I am doing my level best to feel abundant and count my blessings, when quite frankly I smell of sick and I am white with exhaustion and I would prefer to close the door on my life for a week or six…

But I am The Vintage HouseKeeper and this is not the right spirit at all, so bear with me while I remind myself of all that is scrumptious about my life …

I love my house. It’s smaller than you could possibly imagine, but every square inch counts and every corner glitters with something I adore. Sometimes I get carried away- like the day I colour coded the bookcase and Mark watched in bemused horror as I stripped the jackets off our books, and worried about where the rainbow striped book would live. Please don’t look too closely, I’ve always thought you could know a person simply by the books they read and I would die if you came to the conclusion that I had a strange obsession with german footballers, lived on potatoes and read nothing more challenging than dear old Maeve Binchy…

Bookcase

When it plainly isn’t true: I adore most European Footballers (that Chelsea Manager makes me feel faint with desire!!) , shouldn’t eat potatoes at all and occasionally stretch my mind as far as little Anita Shreve can take me.

So I love my bookcase and my bookcase loves me, but not as much as I just love this plate.  Mark says that I love it, more than I love him and he might be right. It is just soooo pretty, and Mark might be many things, but pretty he ain’t…

Plate

and then there is my lady…

Lady

When I was twenty three I opened a delicious little house shop and this lady was the first thing I bought for it at a la-di-dah trade fair. I was so excited, but when I opened the box, she was all bashed and sorry looking, and being naive, it never entered my head to send her back, so I took her home, and here, ten years later, she is: a permanent reminder of those lovely times. If the house is on fire, she is coming with me, because to me she represents happiness and comfort…

As does chocolate cake

Chocolatecake

which is chopped into little pieces above, because having a really rather severe case of dropsy today, it came crashing onto the kitchen counter and kind of crumbled before my eyes, but is delicious and kind of cheery all the same.

So thats it. A few of my favorite things. Can’t say I feel better, but it’s nothing a cold glass of milk and a slice of said chocolate cake won’t sort out…

Have a nice night.
