Bye Bye Bathroom Carpet.

Yes I know. It was unsanitary and unnecessary and lots of  other "un"  words you probably care to mention, but I liked it and now I’m sad. The bathroom looks bare, I’ve got cold toes and it the whole matter is going to require a spell of decorating I haven’t got time for.

So opinions please?  Stain the floorboards? Paint the powder pink cupboard a shabby shade of white? Paint the whole thing white? Buy new carpet???

Paint and seal the wood floors and by throw a cushy rug on top to keep you feet warm.

  4. Kris says:

leave it! It looks rustic and comfy. Pile a couple of throw rugs on it in deep green and leave the boards undone!

I love it the way it is, I would vote for a new bathroom carpet !!!!

I looks great to me. Just whitewash the floorboards, purchase a couple of easy to launder bathmats to keep yours and Finley's toes warm as you step out and call it a day:)
A couple of years ago, my husband ask me what I wanted for Christmas. When I told him I wanted 6 white bathmats, the all cotton kind with big plush loops, he looked at me like I had lost my mind. I explained that I already had one, so if I got 6 more I could change them out each day of the week. White all cotton means I can throw them in the machine with a bit of bleach and they come out looking brand new.
He told me he would comply only if I promised never to tell anyone that he gave me such a gift. So don't let him know I told you LOL.

I would paint the floor boards white and add some really plush bathroom rugs.

I agree – paint the floor white and the cupboard looks adorable in pink.

  11. sherry says:

Leave it the way it is, with a new rug! Definitely a new rug.

  12. Gill says:

Paint the whole thing white in my opinion, it always looks fresh and clean. Add some new accesories (bathmats, towels, shower curtain) and it'll look fab. Carpets in bathroom are a bit yucky especially with little boys 🙂

  13. rebekka says:

what about a dark stain on the floorboards and the cupboards white? Ha…just what you want…the most amount of work possible!

  14. dianeinjapan says:

No carpet!! I could never have carpet in my bathroom–it seems there's always water splashed on the floor (where I live, that would mean lovely smatterings here and there of mold and mildew). Anyway, I don't think you need to do much to your bathroom unless you just really want to–perhaps a whitewash or light stain on the floor, definitely a cute rug or two!

  15. Marsha says:

I, myself, don't care for a carpet in the bath. How about a nice rag rug, the kind with the plush loops, in various shades of cream, pink and blush? Over top of a translucent wash of paint over the boards, it would be a comfy (and washable) addition.

  16. Meredith says:

I agree with many above. Paint the floor boards white and get a cozy plushy bathmat. It'll look lovely!

  17. Tina says:

what about a pretty minty green color of paint for the floor? something that contrasts very nicely with the pinks??

It looks fab the way it is! but you could paint the floorboards, you need farrow and ball floor paint, order online it comes in 24 hours, and I love the pink cupboard and the little rug! exquisite taste Madam!

  20. Ali says:

Sand and seal the floor boards to damp-proof then. Then natural stain the floor. Sand the remaining wood, including the furniture, seal and natural stain. If you must colour then, use colour as a contrast rather than the main attraction on the wood. I'm drawn to natural woods and ocean colours of blues, greens and sand.
No carpeting in the bathroom or kitchen. Too hard to keep sanitary. Instead, get two or three more slip proof mats to put down for cozy toes. Replace the shower curtain with a fabric one that has a liner.
Shall we come round and have a decorating party?

You really do have exquisite taste Alison – the bathroom looks fabulous in this picture just as it is! (Can't imagine it WITH a carpet?)
If you don't have time or inclination to re-decorate, than why do it?? It already looks lovely – you're lucky to have such a great floor under there! I guess the only practical thing that might need doing is to make the wooden floor waterproof in some way. I would paint it with proper floor paint – what colour are the tiles? If white, I'd do the floor white. I love painted floors! Just remember to work backwards towards the door!!
If a change is as good as a rest, then maybe just adjust some accessories so it feels a bit different to you – without too much effort – cosy (washable) bath mats/rugs (though I wish someone would invent a good looking bathroom mat, that looks like a shabby chic rug, but is rubber backed and washable….. there's a business venture for you!).
I need to rip out my bathroom carpet too – but my husband is resisting, due to the cold toes thing. It just makes me feel bilious thinking what germs must be lurking in it… What with the super glue mark as well (don't ask) it just looks a disgrace. Like you though, I will feel obliged to change the whole room then, and can't do that at the moment. It's not exactly the bathroom of my dreams…. want to swap?!

At the risk of being controversial…
    Tiles!!
Ha ha ha! Knew you'd hate that idea but I'm a convert!!

  23. Melanie says:

Your bathroom looks lovely just as it is. If I was you I would just stain the floor boards with clear varnish, that way you can still see the natural wood, which looks lovely. We are planning on decorateing our bathroom before christmas, I was thinking of a baby blue colour with white accessories, as the tiles that are down in our bathroom now are a dark blue colour, hope our bathroom ends up looking as cosy as yours!
Please leave your cabinet powder pink, it looks lovely.

  24. mimi says:

Oh what a beautiful bathroom! May I suggest varnish the floor, and then find the thickest, fluffiest, pinkest rug or bathmat that you can find?

  26. Heather says:

Paint the floor white, leave the cabinet and buy a pink fluffy bath mat or two.

  27. Anita says:

I agree with all those who said paint the floor white… As long as you find a big, ridiculously fluffy bath mat to go on it!!

  29. roundabout says:

I never knew that anyone carpeted bathrooms until I lived in the U.K. Not to beat a dead horse, but I agree with everyone who's said that carpet in a room that gets lots of water splashed about seems unsanitary. I love the idea of white painted floorboards. Or, if you are considering repainting the cupboard, paint the cupboard white and the floor a lovely very pale sky blue.

  30. Nonnie says:

Your bathroom looks absolutely lovely and I have to agree carpets in bathrooms – yuk! I don't think you need to do a major re-decoration as it looks lovely already but maybe just paint the floorboards white and give them a stain of matt varnish on top for practicalities sake. Then find a gorgeous vintage looking fluffy bath mat to pop down and keep your toes warm. I don't know if you've got Cath Kidstons first book but if not try to get a copy as there is a bathroom in there with a gorgeous bright pink bath mat in a very vintage looking bathroom. I'm imagining that type in your bathroom on top of a white painted floor.

  31. La Chouette says:

Your bathroom is lovely, you do not need to make many changes. I got sick with toxic mold once: please, no carpet in a humid room. Very unhealthy even if you can't smell the mold, it's there.
As for the floor colour, it's up to your good taste. I like the idea of a natural varnish (would look scandinavian) or beautiful tiles. Tiles are easy to clean… Everything else looks fine the way it is. It's a romantic bathroom – must look amazing at night with candles.

I agree with all the painted wood floor votes. My bathroom is tiled, floor, and walls, and I live in cccccold Pennsylvania (US). We simply step on the bathmat or wear slippers to keep our tootsies warm. It's such a breeze to keep clean. And, like Rhonda, I have a jillion white cotton bathmats that I wash frequently with bleach. LOVE that!

Having radiant heat, I have been spoiled. Whenever its cold outside and I wake up my feet are greeted by the warm bathroom floors. I would paint the floorboards with a stain or a white, and either leave the cupboard pink or paint it white if you stain the floors!

    Hi
I liked your bathroom very much. Very simple and pretty.
Once, on the BBC, I saw them stencil a bathroom floor; it was gorgeous!
It looked like tile when they were done, at much less cost. You could really put some color there, which would show traffic less, too.

If you could put bathroom carpeting under a microscope and see millions of creepy crawlies, you would not be asking the question of SHOULD I change it. Get rid of it. Non-slip throw rugs that can be washed if you must have something. Wear your slippers and you won't get cold feet. Don't be so lazy and so self-pampering. Cleanliness is next to godliness remember. If you have boys or men in the house do you know how many times they "miss?" Ugh!
