There must be at least three hundred reasons why doing a seasonal scrub in September is a terribly good idea and after nine years of talking you into this glorious festival of seasonal housework, I am pretty sure you know them all by now…
I do it because despite my dedication to my own routines, the
If it is true that the house is a reflection of our souls, then it is essential that we make our homes peaceful and shiny: for isn’t that how we most want to be? Peaceful and shiny? I know I do, but much of the time I feel demented and a little dusty and I am pretty sure that is how my house feels too…
So we scrub to offer ourselves fresh hope: we scrub so that we can say life doesn’t always have to feel like this. Life can be lovely again, fresh and joyful – a blank canvas for all the seasonal delights we can throw at it!
Today I am starting the month long version of the scrub, so that I can pace myself better while I have a lot of family and work commitments. I started the procedure yesterday by pulling out all the nonsense that has accumulated under my reclaimed timber bed and nearly gave myself something of a coronary while sneezing and huffing and puffing my way through the shocking amount of fuzzy dust to be found in there. Soon I was insisting that the mattress be carted downstairs while I indulged in a thorough scrub, had Richard fix the slightly wobbly joints of the bed and wiped down the entire frame with
What started off as a small job, ended up taking almost all day as I sat looking astounded at all the little vintage bits of loveliness I had acquired over the Summer and summarily stuffed under my bed and forgotten about, and tried to explain to a visiting friend why we seemed to have a bed set up right in the centre of the living room while it was vacuumed and aired…
This then is the Seasonal Scrub: small jobs run away with themselves and turn all too quickly into mammoth tasks: but this I know for sure – come October I will be so very grateful that I didn’t throw in the feather duster….
And you I think, will thank me too. Let’s get scrubbing Darlings…x

Autumn has always been I time for me to make changes, clean house, etc., which I think harkens back to my getting ready for school days when getting new clothes and organizing my new school supplies was a very exciting time for me. However, I’m struggling this year and my house reflects that. Trying to help aging parents, surprise visit from my son (that was a good thing!) and now a nasty sore throat and cold has thrown me off. I hope I can get started soon.

Looking forward! Now: To the bedroom to check what’s under the bed!
