Written by Agnes Slight Turnball in 1888, When Queens Ride By tells the tale of a housewife down on her luck and exhausted with the effort it takes to help her husband make their homestead profitable, who has an encounter with a “queen” who with just a few well chosen words helps Jenny see the error of her ways and sets her on the path to femininity, domestic pleasure and marital joy…

Though the story is very much of it’s time and even old-fashioned me rather bristled occasionally, the message it ultimately delivers is charming, sweet and still very much relevant today…

  1. Thank you for sharing this. I’ve only ever seen a vastly shortened version of this story. I must say, I enjoyed the longer version which you shared much more!
    I just looked up the Author and was surprised to learn she lived for 60 years just a few miles from where I live now!

  4. Oh what a lovely surprise this little item turned out to be. I read it through yesterday and put it in my Kindle app for future reading. I will definitely be reading this regularly – when I need a gentle reminder of the value of beauty and keeping my home lovely. Thank you dear Alison!
