Hi Alison, I adore your blog.
By my reckoning Finley is around 4 or 5? Personally, I think maybe too much stress is required by the ‘system’ as to what children should be able to do at particular ages. I suggest you just take deep breaths and see it for what it is – a total load of crap. Don’t get sucked in to ‘what’s normal’. Plenty of kids can’t properly use a pair of scissors or spell their name when they start school here in Australia, which is usually at age 5 or 6. From different sources I’m thinking that in the U.S. a lot of children have more required of them than they are ready for at that particular time. I hope this isn’t coming across as judgmental, what it is intended to be is reassuring and a gentle reminder not to get caught up and left feeling inadequate by the ‘system’. It is meant as a post of motherly support 🙂
…and I know my comment had nothing to do with the curtain rod post – which by the way, must make me slightly evil minded too, because that’s just what it looks like – the dissatisfied glint in his eye perhaps 🙂
Okay, I promise this is the last time I'll post today. My apologies for the U.S thing as I've just realised you're in the U.K. But I think in the U.K. things might be getting out of hand with the whole kid expectation thing. There was a show on here a while back. I can't recall the name of it, but it was all about how parents went a bit crazy on the who 'kid/social' front.
Sue hope it doesn't happen here – I just don't have the energy for that sort of thing.

I always thought that my rather eccentric, retired-actress ways (think Rosalind Russell and Lucille Ball as "Mame" and you'll get the idea) should be toned down a bit so as not to frighten the everyday folk. But now I am liberated! You have given be confidence to honour my inner leading lady and LEAD! I shall be unique, flamboyant and waffle as I please!
