So you know how it is a truth universally regarded that a certain vintage housekeeper has got astonishingly bad taste? Well I thought it was high time I explained myself…
Take the red shoes. What can I say? They are shiny, red patent leather with a grosgrain bow. Absolutely hideously ugly but oh how I adore them. You see somewhere inside of my demure exteriour lives a trollop of the highest order. The kind of trollop who has to be talked out of leopardskin platforms with pink ribbons, or glass heeled stripper shoes, in the name of all that is respectable…
In all other respects, I maybe slightly wack, but I am certainly not given to the outrageous. Except when it comes to shoes. Particuarly silly red ones like these that appeal to my inner slapper, send me swooshing back home when I click my heels, and inspire a whole new decorating scheme for my bedroom, where said shoes currently reside on a shelf facing my bed. All at the same time.
So yey for tacky shoes. They brighten up an all black wardrobe no end. Just talk me out of the fishnet stockings ok?
Next on the list of downright out and out bad taste, comes the green and gold, very horrible, Tate Gallery wallpaper on the landing. I know!! What on earth possessed me. It is soooooooo ugly I shut my eyes when I run down the hall.
Forgive me I was pregnant when I chose it and we all know that hormones are the root of all evil.
And then theres Robert. Sweet, smiley, lovely Robert Taylor grinning away in a corner of my living room in a quite frankly spectacularly, scary fashion. I saw him a junk shop and ladies I couldn’t resist. Yes, I realise he looks half mad. And yes, to all those who have graced my living room and peered bewildered at my latest man, I agree- he does nothing for the decor.
But he makes me feel happy.
And when all is said and done that is what I suspect bad taste is for. To remind us not to take ourselves too seriously. To allow our inner trollop to applaud her astonishing lapses in taste, and to let everything that is beautiful bask in the dubious glory of all that is downright ugly.
Housekeepers, I make no apologies. I have bad taste. In everything from cheese, to underwear, bedside lamps and cheap plonk. (Glass of Blue Nun anyone?) I can’t help it.
You will however be thrilled to hear that I suspect my taste in men of the living and breathing kind, is on the up…
I must disagree, at least as far as the shoes go! Not only is that particular pair very cute (it does indeed conjure thoughts of Dorothy), but I've seen red patent pumps all over every fashion mag this month. You are VERY hip 🙂
I agree — I don't think the shoes are tacky. It all depends on how you wear them, too. A pair of funky shoes like that peeking out of a pair of jeans or wool trousers would be fabulous. Or with a knee-length skirt. I do think it would be a LITTLE too much with the fishnets, however!
Do Robert Taylors eyes move from side to side like in old spooky films? ha ha, but I know where youre coming from,I have a framed pic of Clark Gable amongst those of my nearest and dearest!
Nothing wrong with those shoes. They're gorgeous! I love red shoes and own numerous pairs myself.
I like the green wallpaper! Does that mean I have bad taste too? By the way, have you seen the you tube clip of a very worse for wear Amy Winehouse trying to sing on the Charlotte Church show? Me thinks she'd had one too many blue nuns!
And what's wrong with having a magnificent obsession over Robert Taylor? Dark hair and blue eyes have always had this magnetic lure for me and he is one of them. You’re a lucky girl to have such a man about the house…lol
I have quite a few actors of that era that I just adore…too many to mention but wouldn't mind having one of Clint Eastwood's in his poncho with cigar….love ,love ,love
Annabelle
Well, the colgate smile might be a bit much(though there must be a not mad picture), but the wallpaper is lovely, and so are the shoes.
Not sure about fishnets, I'd reccomend red seamed black stockings, and a little black dress.
If a little self indulgence is bad taste, count me in the club 🙂
Oh gosh! We do it again! I bought a remarkably similar pair of shoes a few weekends ago- only mine have slingbacks! And I bought some fishnets in the same shopping trip…..!
That's my darling from waterloo Bridge!
Those shoes are AMAZING!
And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
I just love redshoes! I have 2 pair: 1 summer sandals with a corkheel and a big red leather flower on top and the 2nd oair are suede with a stilettoheel……I wear them often with a black polkadotted dress or just plain black T shirt dress or my pinkish silkskirt in the summer! I feel devine in them! And Robert Taylor? Although he didn't realy age handsome…when he was young…! Did you see him in Camille with (my favourite actress) Greta Garbo!!??? This is my most favourite movie ever!! Just like Enchanted April is!

What brand are those shoes? I have been searching for a pair exactly like them.
