At the risk  of sounding a little bit giddy and probably borderline hysterical, I just wanted to whisper that a certain tall youngish man has treated me to something I have been coveted since the day they were invented. Gotta love that man. Ooooooh yes, readers, Richard has in act of unprecendented kindness ordered me a Kindle and I can barely sleep for anticipation of it’s delivery. While I know any discussion of the Kindle or it’s Reader friends tends to throw up massive debate about the validity of books living inside a box instead of scrumptiously available to you in all their paper glory, I see the Kindle as offering access to a billion and one Vintage books quickly and easily, and all ready, hunting round the Kindle book sites has thrown up  a raft of books I just cannot wait to share with you… So tell me this and tell me no more: will you be buying a Kindle or other reader? Can you imagine reading books this way? Or do you already have one and find yourself deeply embroiled in the greatest love affair of your technological life? Watch this space for more news on my own love affair with the Kindle as soon as I can get my rose scented hands on it…

Hey Alison! To answer questions…My husband just recieved a Nook from his mother for his birthday. He is in love! And he still picks up the paper kind as well! Our daughter went in halfsies with said father and purchased an iPad. I happen to enjoy it so much more….as a laptop option. Its reader is a little bit more user friendly than either the nook or kindle in my estimation. Then again, I don't get out much… Enjoy your gift to its fullest! I have caught my girl reading Austen on the iPad!!!
Lovely!!! I have Kindle for PC downloaded into my computer. It's wonderful. I have several vintage books downloaded. I love paper books, but sometimes you can't get the oldies in book form, so if you want to read them, what are you to do?
Hi Alison, I have a Kindle and I love it. My kids gave it to me for Mother's Day and I use it everyday. There are tons of free and very cheap titles offered. I still love to read and buy paper books, especially craft books. I buy almost all my fiction for my Kindle now. Smiles, Sally
I bought my hubby a Kindle for Christmas this past year, and the only regret is that they are so much cheaper now. I am hoping for one of my own this Christmas. The thing he especially likes about the Kindle is that there is no glare. I'm sure you'll LOVE yours!
I will likely buy one for my Hubby for Christmas this year. I do not want one, but will most likely sneak his from time to time just to be certain. : ) Enjoy yours!!
Sorry, but there won't be a Kindle in my future. I look at that lovely painting in your post and think … if everyone had Kindles instead of books, paintings like that wouldn't exist! But, more practically speaking, my main issue with the Kindle is that if I buy an e-book, I can't then pass it on my friends, the way I do with real books. I can't give it to the charity shop or put it on Book Mooch when I'm finished with it. And let's not forget the absence of that heavenly book smell! So, no, it's not for me. But, for someone who really wants one, it's a lovely present. So congratulations!
I will not be acquiring an electronic reader. I'm an editor, so I spend way too much time reading on a screen as it is. When I want to relax with a book, it needs to be on paper, I think. I will say, though, that if I traveled more, or had a daily commute on a train or something, I would consider it, because they're so much more portable than carrying around tons of books.
I think you are going to loooove it. I didn't want one. Had no intentions of buying one. I felt a little Luddite about it all. I'm definitely biased towards old-fashioned ink and paper. I won the Kindle randomly (I never win anything) and after I experienced it, I discovered how I loved it. It's so nice to have so many books in one small package. It's so nice to be able to buy a book and have it right away, in the middle of the night, or the middle of nowhere. There's still something about paper, though, flipping through the pages, that feels as if it will never die.
I didn't want one for the longest, but after playing with my MIL's, I think I'd like to have one after all, mostly for travel but also for access to vintage titles, as you mentioned (can't wait to see your recommendations!).
I have the kindle app on my iPhone, and it was a good way of taking some extra books on holiday in case I ran out (I have to confess to being one of those people who takes about 12 books for a fortnight, to my husband's horror). I'd love to try the Kindle proper, and in fact I'm about to download the app onto my new (hooray for husbands taking work trips to the USA) iPad. I think they're a fab idea, but nothing can ever replace that heavenly, musty smell of an old bookshop, or the smell of a brand new book! I think your Kindle will complement your real-life books beautifully. Can't wait to hear what you think!
I have the Barnes and Noble "Nook" ereader and I love (!!!!!!!) it. I am a book lover, but this actually makes it easier for me to enjoy a read because I can take a lot of books with me. I tend to read more than one at a time. I will continue to buy real books when I purchase cookbooks or craft books Enjoy your Kindle!!
You will love it! Books at your whispernet fingertips. And oh, the samples. Downloadable samples of all kinds. A book girl's delight. I love mine. Love it, love it. Greatest device invented. Nothing like reading on a computer screen (no eye strain from glare). I still love my craft books and magazines but Kindle is a ladies' best friend. Big hug, Deborah
I know what you mean, but sometimes new, shiny and modern really is great. I would never give up all my old real paper books though and do wonder how it will affect future generations that can't browse second hand books for old gems in quite the same way.

I would like that for traveling. But there are not so many books in German yet. And I'm not so good in English.
