  1. The Martha being referred to is the Biblical Martha whose sister Mary sat at Jesus's feet and listened instead of helping Martha ready the house and prepare the meal for Jesus and other guests. Martha complained that her sister wasn't helping her and Jesus asked which was more important: cleaning house or the Word.
My tendencies are towards Mary—sometimes I could use a little "Martha"!

  2. I must confess to being a bit of a Martha…biblical or stewart !!! lol and after 33 years the house is still standing ! lol

  3. I think it's a little unfair calling an over-eager home-maker a Martha. Martha (the bible one not Ms Stewart!) didn't just miss something hugely important sitting under her nose and carry on cleaning and cooking she also did it without grace until she was reminded.

  5. oh, I'm a Martha. This is one story I intend to get to the bottom of when I arrive in Heaven and am allowed to ask questions. Just where were they going to get dinner? The McDonald's and delivery pizza days were not really "in" then. I understand the spirit of the thing; I'm quite devout. But really… Martha had every reason to expect a little help. If Mary would have helped her, they could have BOTH sat at Jesus' feet and listened AND eaten Damascus Olives and Viniagrette or whatever date pie they wanted… no sacrilege intended, and don't browbeat me about this. I Have fought this one in Church with SS teachers for YEARS and YEARS…
