The Pancake Blues.

I had a little cry this morning.

I opened my eyes and thought- maybe I can’t face today. Maybe I will just stay here.

You know one of those days?

And before I knew it I was sobbing on to Mark’s shoulder, begging him not to go to work, to find my lost voice,  banish pmt and find a cure for the common cold.

He laughed, and kissed me and said I was asking to much of him. Then he got up and left  me crying grey tears  into my vintage pillowcase.

It’s nothing you see.  It’s exhaustion. And no end to it. It’s nothing. Truly it isn’t.

So I pulled myself  out of bed and hugged him goodbye and drank coffee and freaked the baby out with my strange raspy whisper and then I  made pancakes.

Because although I made the batter yesterday, I forgot to have Pancake Tuesday thereafter.

And so this morning, in a break with tradition, I have had Pancake Wednesday Morning.

One perfect pancake with chocolate orange sauce and one perfect pancake with lavender butter and sugar served with  that strange hybrid  of a plum and an  apricot: the plucot.

How did they taste? Like cardboard. Like everything else.

But it’s the ritual that counts isn’t it?

Ritual matters on day’s like this.

  1. Oh Alison honey, I wish I could give you a great big hug! I sometimes ask Carl for the impossible too…only little things, like 'make it all go away' or 'stop my head hurting please' and so on. He gives much the same response as Mark! Big hugs to you, Mimi xxx ps are you still getting bouncy emails?

  2. I have felt so much this way in the past few months…not daily occurances mind you, but enough icky days to wonder if it's the winter blues, hormonal imbalance or what. Luckily, though the weather outside is frigid, the sun is out once again and I'm feeling a whole lot better. I'm glad I'm not the only one with icky days. I hope your feeling better soon…

  3. Alison, I hope you feel better. Try and take it easy today if you can. When I'm feeling sick and yucky, all I can do is cuddle with my little one's while watching videos and drinking lot's of tea. Take Care sweetie.

  5. sometimes, being a woman is just – well not fun. pmt or menopause – in your words, rubbish, just rubbish. Those pancakes probably tasted wonderful to Finley – they were made by his mum, with love.
Alison, not being bossy here – but sweetie, you are as hard on yourself as I am on me – you need to take a leaf from your own gorgeous book and pamper yourself silly xoxo

  7. Poor lass! Don't worry, Alison, in just a few days you will feel so much better, I promise. Until then, a glass of whiskey in the bath (drink it, don't tip it in!) will work wonders. Hic.

  9. You need a hot bubbly bath, a lovely scented candle, some delicious bath oil, some warm fluffy towels and a HEEYOOGE glass of Baileys (elegant it is not, but sometimes it is necessary).
Or else a jar of Nutella and a spoon.
    Hope you're feeling better soon
