The October Almanac

A paper world for the longer evenings.

October has arrived with a ti full of treacly biscuits, something simmering in the kitchen and a suspicion that the coat behind the door didn't look quite so spooky...

The third BrocanteHome Domestic Almanac is a richly illustrated, printable A4 collection of seasonal reading, recipes, thoughtful domestic experiments and glorious old-fashioned paper play.

This month’s theme is Houseprint: the impression your life leaves upon a room. Explore the objects, habits and small arrangements that make your home distinctly yours, then venture into The House After Dark, an October appendix full of familiar creaks, fireside comforts and a little domestic mischief.

Inside you’ll find:

• Houseprint essays and worksheets, with experiments for using an overlooked treasure and making everyday life easier.
• Four October recipes, including Mushroom, Butter Bean & Thyme Pot, Pear, Walnut & Ginger Crumble, and spicy treacle biscuits.
• The Reading Room, with book recommendations, reading notes, bookplates and literary ephemera.
• Seasonal care and domestic fieldwork, including a house walk, repair ledger and October body forecast.
• The Playground, with a paper theatre, curiosity cabinet, pantry labels, Halloween paper dolls and decorative masks.
• Quiet colouring pages, commonplace sheets, keepsake pockets and floral fireside matchbox papers.
• The House After Dark, with Halloween memories, illustrated miniature stories, still-room comforts and a few agreements for the longer nights.

Print it, write upon it, cut it up, colour it in and tuck its little pieces into your journal. Choose one afternoon’s project or return throughout the month.

No need to complete everything. Even the paper dolls have other engagements.

An illustrated domestic companion for making October more interesting, more useful and more your own.
